Here’s What You Need to Know About Canon’s New Full Frame Camera

An inexpensive full-frame camera perfect for travel
Canon R8

It’s a big week of gear announcements for Canon. Last night the camera brand announced the Canon EOS R8, a compact full-frame that features the same 24.2 megapixel sensor found inside the Canon R6 Mark II. It also happens to be one of the brand’s most affordable full-frame options at only $1499 (body only).  Although it lacks In-Body Image Stabilization, it does feature the same fast and accurate AF system that’s found inside the R6 II.

Our friends at our sibling site Imaging Resource has a chance to check out pre-production units of all the new Canon gear a week before they launched during a press event in Charleston, South Carolina.

“The lightweight body and intuitive menus made it easy to pick up and shoot, no matter the subject. Better still, the 24.2-megapixel image sensor delivers impressive image quality and the autofocus system is intelligent and reliable.” Jeremy Gray writes about his experience shooting with the R8.

According to Gray it seems like a camera well-suited for travel photography and content-creation.

Here’s a full run down of the R8’s specs:

  • Full-frame interchangeable lens camera
  • Canon EOS RF mount
  • 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS image sensor (not backside-illuminated or stacked)

  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF with approximately 100% AF area coverage

  • AI-powered subject detection AF like the R6 Mark II
  • No in-body image stabilization
